The Exumas is also the location for the first land and sea park of its kind in the world. Located approximately 65 miles southeast of Nassau, this natural wonder, established in 1959 by The Bahamas National Trust, stretches for 176 square miles. While swimming is allowed, the park and marine life are protected. It has become a no-take fishery reserve since 1986 ensuring the numerous ocean creatures are protected.
These enchanting little cays were first settled by the Adreans who traveled by boats to The Bahamas from the Mosquito Coast region of Africa. Their descendants, the Lucayan Indians, later began colonies on The Exumas and survived by fishing and farming. In 1783 American Loyalists settled. They were reputed as establishing cotton plantations and African slaves. Remnants of these plantations can still be found.
